Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
