Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like typical physical horror, but beneath Together resides a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The story starts when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that come with most partnerships after ten years. At their core, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
