Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Partnership Forged By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
