Larian Studios Announce a New Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG Ever

The anticipation about the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer that included memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team might be designing a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it sparked the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—qualities that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths that are viable by choosing a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be solved in a variety of manners, sometimes in surprising fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can anticipate a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
