EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
