The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and undermines the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major counterpunch by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
